SSA/RMSA Teachers protest, want colleagues released

Ludhiana, February 5
The police and protesting teachers belonging to various unions kept playing hide and seek throughout the day today. The police had made foolproof arrangements to keep the teachers away from the Mini-Secretariat. The teachers managed to reach Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Government Girls Senior Secondary School at Bharat Nagar Chowk.

The teachers' unions, including the SSA/RMSA Teachers Union, the Democratic Teachers Front, the Government Teachers Union, the Government Schoolteachers Union, the Elementary Teachers Union (Sahota) and the BEd Unemployed Front, and kisan unions were demanding the release of 58 teachers of the SSA/RMSA Teachers Union arrested on Sunday.

The police had imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in the areas surrounding the Mini-Secretariat to keep the teachers away. A heavy police force was deployed at Bhai Wala Chowk, Bharat Nagar Chowk and Chhatar Singh Park, where the teachers were supposed to assemble. Senior police officials remained on their toes due to the protest.

The teachers alleged that the police had created several hurdles to stop the teachers and detained around 15 teachers at various places. Kawaljeet Khanna, one of the protesters, and some leaders of kisan unions were also detained by the police.

Around 150 teachers, including women, reached Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Government Girls Senior Secondary School at Bharat Nagar Chowk. The protesters wanted to meet the Deputy Commissioner to submit a memorandum.

The teachers raised slogans against the Akali-BJP government for arresting the teachers who were protesting peacefully.

Ramanjeet Singh of the Democratic Teachers Front said, “When Akali workers held a protest against the Centre, they also blocked roads, but Section 144 was not imposed then. Now when the teachers are protesting for their rights, the police are creating hurdles."

Yashpal, a teacher leader, said, “The protest will continue till the government releases our teachers.”

A Tehsildar from the DC's office received the memorandum.
