Members of the SSA/RMSA Teachers Union, Democratic Teachers Front and Government School Teachers' Union, Punjab, protested outside the deputy commissioner's (DC) office on Monday. The protesters demanded release of the 58 teachers, who were arrested by the police from Dana Mandi on Sunday. The
teachers submitted a memorandum to the DC in this regard. SSA/RMSA Teachers' Union district general secretary Iqbal Singh said, "The police department is showing double standards as when political workers protest, they don't arrest them, but when teachers hold rallies and dharnas, they put them behind bars. Therefore, the 48 teachers must be released." Government School Teachers' Union general secretary Parveen Kumar said, "The teachers must be regularised and provided dearness allowance. If authorities do not release the teachers, we will burn the effigy of Punjab government at Bhai Wala Chowk on Wednesday. Besides, around 25,000 teachers will gather in Bathinda for a state-level protest." Meanwhile, the Salem Tabri police produced the arrested teachers before additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) Harmohan Singh, who ordered to send them to Ludhiana Central Jail on judicial remand.
