Punjab Govt to recruit 256 doctors; Feb 10 last date to apply

The Punjab government will recruit 256 MBBS doctors by March-end and the responsibility for the recruitment has been given to the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC). While stating this health minister Surjit Kumar Jyanih admitted to the shortage of doctors in the district hospital. "The department tries to recruit doctors as per the need, but many doctors go for specialisation or PG studies, which ultimately lead to staff shortage
again," said Jyani. Out of 256 posts of doctors, 78 are backlog vacant posts and 178 are newly-created ones. The backlog posts became vacant because many doctors left jobs due to outdoor postings or low salaries as compared to private hospitals. In Ludhiana district, nearly 50% posts of medical officers are vacant. Assistant civil surgeon Dr KS Saini said the department was facing acute shortage not only of doctors but other medical staff, clerks, etc., as well and it affected the work. He said with the new recruitments better functioning of the department could be expected. Eligible candidates can apply till February 10. They can apply online for the post of medical officers (general) on the PPSC website.
