Thousands of teachers working in the government schools in the rural areas of the state may find it offensive, but Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal says that 'good teachers' do not prefer village schools. He was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of a special school at Bathinda to impart free education with free hostel facility for meritorious students of the state government schools, who would achieve 80% or above marks in their Class 10. Badal said the state government had
planned to establish six such schools across the state. While addressing the gathering, Badal said, "These schools would have been established in villages. But good teachers do not prefer village schools for teaching. So we have opened this school in the city so that best of the teaching talent should be provided to the intelligent students to pursue their studies," said Badal. Five similar schools would be established at Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and SAS Nagar (Mohali). The school at Bathinda would cater to six districts of Bathinda, Mansa, Muktsar, Ferozepur, Fazilka and Faridkot. Coming from a minority community, Badal said the communal violence Bill should not interfere with the rights of the state. "There is nothing special in the central police. We also have the same police. At the end of the day, humans have to take decision on the ground. So the central government should not add any such provision to the communal violence Bill that interferes in the affairs of the state. The Centre frames every Bill in such a way that it interferes in the affairs of the states," said Badal. The chief minister claimed that his government was making all-out efforts to ensure that the students of poor and weaker sections of society must get quality education and equal opportunities so as to compete with their convent-educated peers. Member of Parliament from Bathinda, Harsimrat Kaur Badal was also present at the occasion and she congratulated the chief minister on his birthday. She said it was a historic day for the Malwa region from where this unique scheme of establishing special schools had been initiated by the CM. Badal asked people to support Harsimrat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Amongst those present on the occasion included education minister Sikander Singh Maluka, chief parliamentary secretary Sarup Chand Singla, MLA Darshan Singh and assistant media adviser to the deputy CM, Harjinder Sidhu.
