Exam for Food Inspectors rigged, say candidates

Chandigarh, December 24
Another controversy has broken out regarding the conduct of examination for recruiting 461 Food Inspectors in the Food and Civil Supplies Department. As many as 1.92 lakh candidates had applied for the post.

However, only 70,000 candidates could appear for the exam conducted by Panjab University on December 15 owing to unprecedented traffic jams at the entry points to Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali.

The result is already out with 4,610 candidates clearing the exam. Sources said at a particular centre, almost all candidates have been declared pass whereas at other centres, not more than eight or 10 candidates have made it.

Questioning the validity of the result, candidates Partap Singh and Mohit, have sought that the result be cancelled and an independent agency asked to hold an inquiry.

PK Verma, exam coordinator, said in case of one particular centre (code number 1,338), almost all candidates had cleared the test. He said there was no security outside this centre and a good number of candidates, who arrived late, had barged in. Some, who forcibly entered the centre, tore the answer sheets of candidates taking the exam. Some answer sheets were taken away.

On the basis of a report submitted by the observer and after a discussion with government officials, all candidates at this centre had been declared pass and would be eligible to appear in the final test scheduled for January 12, Verma said.

Unconvinced, Mohit maintained the this decision was discriminatory.

It is strange that the state government decided to hold the test at the state capital instead of the district headquarters.

This resulted in traffic snarls on almost all state highways because of which only 70,000 candidates could take the test.
