Volunteers above 50 yrs to teach dropouts-Maluka

Ludhiana Under the Right to Education Act, the state government has planned to recruit teaching volunteers above age of 50 for teaching children who cannot go to schools. The information was given by Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka, who came to PAU for the World Kabaddi Cup trials. Maluka said that the state has given a grant of Rs 18 crore to recruit these volunteers, but instead of
unemployed youth, people above the age of 50 will be deployed as volunteers. Giving reason for the change, he said: “This is a time-bound union government scheme but the young volunteers demand to make their posts permanent. However, if elder people will be deployed, the state will be saved from this demand.” He added that a survey in the state will be conducted to find the number of children who have dropped out of school for any reason but now want to complete their class 10th or 12th. Maluka revealed that in a recent meeting held with National Director General of School Education, the central government had sanctioned the scheme by giving Rs 6,000 for each student. In the meeting, the state also put up a proposal that RTE should be regulated by the state governments only. Maluka said that all the schools and experts feel that there should not be a ‘no fail’ system till class 8th as it deteriorates quality of education. “For better implementation of RTE, states should regulate it completely,” he said. On the demand of aided schools, Maluka said that a meeting had been fixed for next week where a decision on merger of these schools with the government schools or recruiting new staff will be taken.
