Schools flouting board norms to face action, says Maluka

Jalandhar Fate of 263 “associate schools” in Punjab, which do not fulfil the conditions, lay down by the Punjab School Education Board, hangs in the balance as Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka has asked the board to take necessary action against such schools. The file pertaining to the issue was recently moved to the board by the Education Minister. Talking to Daily Post, Maluka said the 263 associate schools, scattered all over
Punjab, did not fulfil even the basic condition of the minimum land requirement. “Schools constructed on less than 500 sq yards are not to be given affiliation by the board. There are 767 such schools in Punjab. The file pertaining to the issue has been sent to the board, which will take an appropriate decision soon,” said Maluka. According to the norms of the board, a school must have a minimum of 500 sq yards to get affiliation. Though the number of schools in the state having land below 500 sq yards is 767, 263 schools have been constructed on less than 200 sq yards. The list of all such schools was sent by the respective district education officers to the department recently. District Education Officer (DEO) Neelam Kumari said, “The instructions from the board have been received and we are compiling the final report of such schools. The action would have been taken on that basis.” However, time and again, the associate schools have been asked to fulfil the conditions of the board, but the schools have reportedly taken the issue lightly and are trying to buy time from the board. However, the board has decided to act tough against the 263 schools, while the remaining defaulting schools will be given time to upgrade their infrastructure.
