Relief for associate schools in punjab, Minister says would be given more time if they fulfill minimum norms

Jalandhar In a move to provide relief to associate schools facing closure, the Punjab Education Department has decided to given them continual certificates if they adhere to some guidelines at least. Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka told Daily Post, “If any associate school fulfills even the minimum guidelines, strict action would not be taken. They would have to conduct a single class in a single
room, no two classes should be conducted from a single room.” Maluka said though these schools had lesser space, they should be able to provide the basic facilities to students. They would be given one or two years to make other guidelines available in their schools for the students, he added. Earlier, the fate of 263 associate schools hung in balance as they did not fulfill the conditions laid down by the Punjab School Education Board. The norms of the Board stipulate that the schools must be built on a minimum area of 500 square yards to get affiliation. Though the number of schools in the state having land below 500 square yards is 767, 263 schools have been constructed on less than 200 square yards. The list of all such schools was sent by the district education officers to the department recently. A teacher from a government senior secondary school said giving relief to these schools was important as their closure would lead many teachers jobless and students would also suffer.
