Punjab assures HC on pay hike to consumer fora members

Faced with contempt proceedings, the Punjab government on Wednesday assured the Punjab and Haryana high court to give a pay hike, as promised earlier, to members of consumer fora across the state. The state government had filed a reply to a public interest litigation in the high court in April last year, submitting that members of consumer fora, appointed from the judicial side or
some other government jobs, may opt for fixed remuneration of Rs. 18,000 per month or they could be paid the last pay drawn by them while in service minus pension. However, the state government did not comply with its own undertaking in the high court even after an year, which led to filing of a contempt of court petition in April this year in the high court.
The state government was paying salary to all members of the district consumer fora only at the fixed rate of Rs. 18,000 per month and to those of state consumer commissions at the rate of Rs. 35,000 per month.
