CBSE students to get more time for OBTA

Ludhiana Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Schools will provide extra time for the students of class IX and XII for the newly introduced Open Text Based Assessment (OBTA). Students will be getting 30 minutes extra for exam other than 15 minutes, provided to students to read the question paper. Students feeling relaxed with this decision of CBSE. OBTA is “meant to incorporate analytical and
theoretical skills, thus moving away from rote memorisation”. But Open text based doesn’t mean the text books will be provided to students. As CBSE has given the sample material for the test and asked the concerned teachers to read, discuss and analyse them with regard to their objectives and outcomes, concepts involved and their application, description, further explanation and exploration of the case/problem/situation involved, higher order thinking skills and analysis from different perspectives. Principal of Nanakana Sahib Public School Harmeet Kaur Wairach said this is going to be very interesting exam for students. They will be provided with the matter by CBSE and they have to read it, analyse and then to answer it taking care of all perspectives. She said this will curb the rote memorisation and unnecessary burden on students. This test will carry 10 per cent weightage in the main exams. A student of class IX in BCM School Rehan said, “We need more time to write when to use books for reference as compared to write what we remember, thus this extra time in the OBTA will prove to be beneficial for us.
