Remedial teaching classes started by the Punjab government for weak students of Class 9 are not going down well with the teachers. After teachers complained of extended working hours, Anjali Bhawra, director general of school education (DGSE)-cum-principal secretary, directed all district education officers (DEOs) to start taking classes on holidays as well. The
DGSE directed the DEOs and school heads to conduct classes as per the convenience of teachers on holidays. The classes, started for students who could not perform well in science and mathematics, had started on October 1 and would continue till December 6. Sources said teachers were finding it difficult to take classes before or after school as many of them came from faraway places. “The authorities have asked us to seek consent of parents and teachers before fixing classes on holidays. The state department has also extended the last date of classes from December 6 to December 16,” said Baljinder Singh, district science supervisor. He said: “We have been asked to conduct 25 lectures of one-hour duration on each subject. There are 1,454 students in the district who need remedial teaching. The DGSE has asked us to take up nearly 10% students of Class 9 from each school for special classes.” Singh said the classes aimed at improving students' overall performance. “The school heads and teachers concerned have been asked to seek permission of students' parents for special classes. Also, classes are open for all students who are interested in improving their subject knowledge,” he added.
