HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times SAS Nagar,
October 08, 2013 Giving a breather to nearly 1 lakh students across the state, the Punjab School Education Board here on Tuesday gave one-year extension to 450 associate schools which are functioning over an area of 200-500 square yards. These schools now have time till March 2015 to improve their infrastructure and increase their campus area, failing which these would be shut down. As per board norms, the campus area of an associate school - a private institution associated (not affiliated) with the board should be at least 500 square yards. Last week, the board had decided to close down 263
associate schools whose campus area is less than 200 square yards and which do not have proper infrastructure, with effect from April 1, 2014. The decision on granting extension to 450 schools was taken at the board officials' meeting with members of the Punjab Private Schools Organisation on Tuesday. Talking to HT, board secretary Gurinder Pal Singh Bath said, "We have told these schools to improve their infrastructure or face closure with effect from April 2015." He added that a survey had found about 700 associate schools flouting board norms. Tej Paul Singh, secretary general, Punjab Private Schools Organisation, said, "We are grateful to the board for granting one-year extension to 450 schools. Regarding the 263 schools which will be closed down from April 2014, the board has assured us that the matter would be considered sympathetically."
