DA issue: UT employees burn admn's effigy

The coordination committee of UT and municipal cooperation employees staged a protest and burnt an effigy of the UT administration demanding immediate release of 10% dearness allowance (DA) and bonus, at PEC here on Tuesday.

The coordination committee had threatened to continue its protests if the administration failed to release the DA.

Chandigarh Government Transport Workers' Union, CTU Conductor Union, Nursing Staff Union, Electrical Workmen Union, MC Employees' Union, CCET
Employees' Union, Public Health Workers' Union, United Front Public Health Employees' Union, Mistrial Staff Union (Technical) , Sports Department Field Workers' Union, CMC Horticulture Workers' Union, Chandigarh Forest Workers' Union, Chandigarh Housing Board Supervisors' Union and MC Road Workers' Union were some of the prominent unions which took part in the protest.

The central government had already released 10% additional DA to its employees which was due from July 2013. The union leadership alleged that the administration had allocated budget for DA, but had failed to give it to employees.

On September 26, the administration had agreed to release the instalment of 8% DA which was been pending since January this year. The development was significant as the Punjab government was yet to release the DA instalments to its own employees.
