60 pc ETT seats not filled in punjab, HC seeks reply

Chandigarh Even after a year, 60 per cent seats of ETT (Elementary Teachers Training) teachers are yet to be filled by the State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT). During the resumed hearing of the case, a Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has given Punjab government a week to take a decision on the issue. The court observed that the
notification for the appointment of ETT
teachers was released in November last year, but nearly 60 per cent seats were yet to be filled. Even the notification for the new academic session has been released by the department despite the fact the seats as per last year’s notification have not been filled. The case would come up for hearing on October 21. In April this year, a Full Bench comprising Justices Hemant Gupta, Ajay Tewari and Rajiv Narain Raina had held that the grant of five additional marks to candidates from rural schools for appointment as elementary teachers was unsustainable. These orders were passed while hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the criteria set by the Punjab government to recruit the ETT teachers. The matter had reached the High Court through a bunch of petitions to decide the constitutional validity of the criteria for appointments to the posts of ETT Teachers in Punjab.
