The issue of teachers eligibility test (TET)-passed candidates has still not settled down completely and now the part-time lecturers, working in different government colleges across the state, are up in the arms against the state government for not implementing the decisions passed by the Punjab Cabinet in a meeting held on December 3, 2011.

At the meeting it was decided that the guest faculty working in various government colleges in Punjab would be paid Rs 10,000 per month and in addition to it, they would be getting an increase of 10 per cent every year. The decision was meant to be implemented from December 1, 2011.

Jatinder Singh Chauhan, working at Government Science College, Jagraon, said the decision to regularise the part-time lecturers was also taken in the meeting. “It was decided that in the mean time, the part-time lecturers will get basic pay along with the AGP and DA with immediate effect. It is very unfortunate that the decision of the cabinet has still not been implemented,” said Chauhan.

The part-time as well as guest faculty lecturers said they were facing hard times both economically and mentally. “No political leader has come forward to extend support in our fight for our right. The regular teachers are getting salaries over Rs 1 lakh and we are meagerly paid by the government despite the fact that we share all the work at par with the regular teachers. Even the Apex court had passed the decision which said that the part-time teachers would be given arrears from January 2006 to July 2009, but till date we have got nothing,” said Satwinder Singh, a part-time lecturer.
