Five unemployed teachers on Sunday climbed a water tank to protest against the Punjab government for not appointing any DPI and physical education lecturers in the last 15 years, leading to more than 3,000 vacant posts of DPI and 1,000 of physical lecturers in the state.
Several unemployed DPI and MPEd teachers gathered in front of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who was here to took part in a function regarding Agarsen Jayanti. To put pressure on the state government to meet their demands, the members of the unemployed DPI/MPEd union climbed the water tank at the city bus stand. They assembled at their protest site and raised anti-government slogans and demanded redressal of their grievances. Meanwhile, ADCP-1 Naresh Dogra convinced the union president, Balwinder Singh, along with some other members to meet the Deputy Chief Minister. Sukhbir assured to fulfill their demands and also invited them for a meeting in Chandigarh. Earlier in the morning, the unemployed teachers staged a dharna at PAP Chowk, but were dispersed from there. The union leaders said that successive state governments had not appointed any DPI and physical education lecturer in the last 15 years. Union leader Balwinder Singh said that Sukhbir had called them to Chandigarh, for which ADCP-1 would arrange a meeting. The protesters warned that they will organise a rally at PAP Chowk (Jalandhar Bye-pass road) if the government failed to address their demands soon.
