10 days on, grants released but staff yet to get salaries

Vandana Singh Ludhiana  The ‘negligence’ of the District Education Office has rubbed salt into the wounds of the aided schools’ staff, as even 10 days after the release of the grant for paying salaries of 48 aided schools from the DPI Secondary, the salaries are yet to reach the staff. On September 6, the grant reached the account of the DEO.
But because department sent wrong bills to the schools, it left the staff in lurch again, who are waiting for their salaries since Apri. The schools are now waiting to get new letters bearing correct amount. District Education Officer (Secondary) got a grant of over Rs 10 crore. In aided schools, the 95 per cent of salary is given by the government, while the rest 5 per cent is added by the management of that school. For example, in Nauhria Mal Jain Public School, a grant of approximately Rs 55 lakh was to be sanctioned, but instead, the department sent a bill of Rs 1 crore, 3 lakh and 60,000. In Arya Girls School, bills sent by the department were Rs 10 lakh less than the actual amount. Now, the schools have to submit an online bill to claim the grant, but till they get the correct amount statement from the department, they cannot avail the released grant. Davinder Rehan, spokesperson of government aided schools association, Punjab, said that the department should understand staff’s problems. “How will we run our families. With each passing day, the delay to get grant already released matters a lot now,” he said. DEO Paramjit Kaur admitted that there was a mistake in making bills by the SO department and thus, --grant could not be disbursed to the schools. She said that she had asked the department to make correct bills at the earliest.
