Around 1,000 contractual teachers seeking regularisation from the state government staged a protest and blocked the national highway-21 in Kharar, here on Saturday. The teachers had gathered from all over the state and blocked the highway for several hours resulting in disgruntled commuters.
People living in nearby villages were seen lifting their baggage on their shoulders to cross the highway. The district police and administration were aware of the protest before hand and had made arrangements to route traffic coming from Chandigarh to Balongi tax barrier via Landran, and traffic coming from Ludhiana via Kurali-Mullanpur to Chandigarh. The district police started making arrangements as early as 7 am. By 11 am, teachers from all over the state gathered at the Kharar municipal park. The teachers walked down from the municipal park to the bus stand and blocked the highway. They were seen shouting slogans against the state government and demanding regularization of jobs. Tight security arrangements were made to avoid any untoward incident and water cannons were deployed on the spot. Though additional deputy commissioner Parveen Kumar Thind reached the spot and assured the teachers of a meeting with state education minister Sikander Singh Maluka on October 3, they refused to lift the jam. At the time of filing the report, the protest was still on.
