Chandigarh:Punjab has notified joint counselling for admission to MBBS and BDS courses for the coming session.
This means that the Bathinda-based deemed private university Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences, besides private
colleges, including Amritsar-based Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Christian Medical College (CMC), Ludhiana, will have no authority to hold separate counselling for UG admissions.
The rules notified last week clarifies that the allotment of 85% state quota medical and dental seats in all government, private medical and dental institutes or deemed universities will be conducted by Faridkot-based Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) on the merit of National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET)-UG that was held nationwide on May 7.
NEET trainer Arvind Goyal said this will make the entire admission process streamlined, transparent and student-friendly. He said as it has been seen in the past, students in Punjab faced harassment due to their arbitrary admission rules of private institution at the time of allotment of seats. “With combined counselling, state domicile students seeking admission will apply with a single agency for admissions,” he added
The admission process has been delayed due to the Madras high court stay over declaration of NEET results. The stay has been granted on a plea stating that NEET question papers for vernacular languages were not the same as that of English. The result date is likely to be announced after the June 12 hearing by the Supreme Court as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) have moved the apex court against stay.
A Patiala based parent Dimple Chopra said the students are under stress due to delay in results. The legal issues should be sorted out at the earliest since the counselling and admission process will be delayed. The CBSE had earlier notified June 8 for the NEET result.
PUNJAB MEDICAL ELIGIBILITY NORMS REVISED FROM 2019-20
The government notification states that the applicant should have passed Class-10 from a Punjab school and should have Punjab domicile to be eligible for 85% state quota seats if eyeing admission in the 2019-20 session. At present, a candidate clearing Classes 11 and 12 from Punjab can claim the state quota seats.
The state government had kept the fee structure unchanged for both the MBBS and BDS courses in government and private colleges
