Zila parishads have failed to manage schools: Teachers

Hoshiarpur, February 16
Teachers of schools run under zila parishads and nagar councils, under the banner of the ETT Union Punjab, held a protest march in the district. The march started from Mukerian and concluded at Nawanshara. The teachers alleged the zila parishads and nagar councils had failed to run the schools smoothly and in past seven years, they did not receive their pay on time.

Union leaders demanded that 13,034 ETT teachers working in 5,752 elementary schools should be shifted to the Education Department.

The teachers held a rally at Shahid Udham Singh park. Union member Ajib Dwivedi, while addressing the teachers, said the state government was “cheating people in the name of panchaytikaran”.

“If the government wants to give rights to panchayats, then why not give them the right to keep a check on the police, hospitals and other departmental offices. If the government cannot do that, then schools should also be handed over to the Education Department,” he said. The teachers demanded that the schools be immediately incorporated into the Education Department. They said if their demand is not met, they would hold a rally in Bathinda on February 27.
