Accusations mar EGS teachers’ counselling Teachers allege that only those who met Chief Minister being given preference

Bathinda, February 19
Counselling procedure of the AIE/EGS teachers, which began in the city on Monday, was today marred by accusations by a section of teachers. The AIE/EGS teachers had observed a dharna in the city from February 2 to 9, were assured by the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal that they would be given jobs for two years.

In keeping with the promise, the documents of the teachers are being collected and counselling session is being held at Government Elementary School, Mall Road, for the AIE/EGS teachers belonging to Bathinda district.

Swarna Devi, an AIE teacher, claimed that preference had been given to those teachers who were part of the deputation which had met the CM to resolve the impasse and that three of the teachers who belonged to the Bathinda district and had been working before other teachers and now been entrusted with the task of helping out the officials from the DEO’s office during the counselling session.

“We all sat together on the dharna for eight days. All of us stayed away from our families and were under equal pressure from the state government and the district administration. The teachers who comprised the deputation which met the CM have been given jobs before us and have also been given plum locations. Although some of them have not even passed the ETT, they have been given the task of checking our files,” she alleged.

“We don’t feel like filing the forms since the agreement reached with the government is not in our favour. The deputation gave in to the pressure of the state government and agreed to a below-expectations agreement. After two years, we will be unemployed again,” said another teacher, who hadn’t submitted her file till 4.30 pm on Wednesday.

The District Education Officer (elementary education), Amarjit Kaur Kotfatta, who is in-charge of the counselling of the AIE/EGS teachers for the Bathinda district refuted the allegation and claimed that the joining letters were being given to the candidates who had submitted all the required documents.

“The teachers, who were the part of the deputation, submitted their files on the first day of the counselling session and were given the joining letters the same day. Similar process is being undertaken for all the candidates. We have received more than 400 files and all the candidates with complete documents have been given joining letters,” she said.

“We have though asked a few teachers who have already got their joining letters to check the files of other teachers to see if all the documents have been attached. We even gave them a list to crosscheck the files with. But they have nothing to do with the counselling process,” the DEO added.

“The question of plum postings does not arise since all the candidates have to be sent back to the centres for out-of-school students. We are forwarding their files to the Block Level Officers who will further process the same. These teachers can’t be given posting other than at the AIE/EGS centres for the time being. Any one claiming otherwise is creating confusion,” she added.
