The Central Board of Secondary Education has asked all schools affiliated to it to send to the board nominations of their teachers for the National Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Awards for Teachers. Schools will have to fill a prescribed form send it along with supporting documents to the directorate of education of their states/UTs/autonomous organisations through proper channel
(principal/DEO/regional offices, etc). The prescribed form and further information may be obtained from the websites www.mhrd.gov.in or www.ciet.nic.in. The award proposes to felicitate those teachers who have enhanced student learning by effectively and innovatively integrating technology-supported learning into the school curriculum and subject teaching, and thereby promoted enquiry-based cooperative-collaborative learning using ICT amongst students. Each awardee teacher gets a laptop and a commendation certificate. All winners form a community of resource persons through networking. According to the data on the board's website, till now 29 candidates (13 in 2010, seven in 2011 and nine in 2012) have been awarded with the National ICT Awards for Teachers. Talking to Hindustan Times, Harmeet Kaur Waraich, principal of Nankana Sahib Public School, said, "It is a good initiative as teachers can be motivated and we can send the nominations of outstanding teachers for the awards." Pradeep Singh, principal of Shamrock Christian Senior Secondary School, said, "We have sent the nominations of our teacher to the board last year and will send the name and details this year, too." Paramjit Kaur, principal of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, said, "Our mathematics teacher was shortlisted for the award last year and we are expecting that she will get the National ICT award. We will send the nominations to the board this year again." India recognised the importance of ICT in education as early as 1984-85 when the Computer Literacy and Studies in Schools (CLASS) Project was introduced. Since then the Indian government has launched several schemes to integrate ICT with classroom teaching. One such major step was the 'ICT@Schools' scheme, which is a window of opportunity to learners in schools across the country. ICT in schools launched in 2004 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Schools was launched in December 2004 to provide opportunities to secondary stage students to develop ICT skills and to promote ICT-aided learning process. Under the scheme, teachers are conferred with a national award for use of ICT in education.
