Members of the Democratic Teachers' Front (DTF) at Punjabi University on Saturday strongly condemned the announcement made by Punjab education minister Sikander Singh Maluka that the construction of a residential school would take place only on the land available with Punjabi University. In a press statement issued here on Saturday, DTF convener Jaswinder Singh Brar said the Punjab government had ignored the genuine and justifiable interests of the university and its fraternity by taking over the university land by compelling the university
authorities. “The government has completely ignored the peaceful and democratic campaign against the land transfer by the faculty, students, employees and well-meaning persons of the university,” he said. He added that they failed to understand that when the government could easily find a piece of land for this purpose in Patiala, why they were interested in acquiring the university land, which was for its extension. The members also condemned the lackadaisical attitude of the university brass in this regard. They urged vice-chancellor Jaspal Singh to stand by the university in this hour of crisis and to save the university's interests. The cash-strapped university had courted a controversy following the decision by the syndicate to hand over 5.6 acre to the state government free of cost for opening of a special school. The estimated market cost of the land is around Rs. 100 crore. The state government has decided to open six Adarsh residential schools across Punjab, especially for the students with more than 80% marks in matriculation. After the schools are set up, the government is likely to hand over the schools' administration to private parties.
