Better late than never, the state government has finally woken up to take initiatives to improve the condition of government colleges which are presently in a complete state of neglect across the state. Director of public instruction (DPI
colleges) Gurdev Singh Ghuman said the government had recently approved allocation of funds worth Rs. 50 crore to provide basic infrastructure and facilities in government colleges. Presently, the colleges across the state are facing shortage of staff and lack of basic amenities due to the apathetic attitude of the authorities concerned. "We have already asked the colleges to submit their respective requirement list with us and we are also carrying out a college-to- college survey to take stock of the basic facilities and infrastructure in the colleges," said Ghuman at the 55th annual sports function at the Government College of Education here. Ghuman said that the state government was committed to improve the standard of higher education in the state. "The administrative and building needs of the colleges will be met in the first phase with first instalment of Rs. 50 crore, while chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has assured to allocate another instalment of Rs. 50 crore in the second phase," he said. Ghuman said vacant posts of teachers would be filled soon and a recruitment drive started at the earliest. Meanwhile, braving the intense cold wave, hundreds of students participated in several sports competitions on the occasion. In the 800meter race, Budh Ram secured the first position followed by Gurwant Singh and Palwinder Singh on the second and the third spot respectively. In the 200 meter race in the girls' category, Ramandeep finished at the first position while Jaspreet and Sukhwinder also made podium finish.
