Notices to Haryana govt, UGC over disparity in retirement age of teaching staff

CHANDIGARH: Taking up a petition alleging disparity in retirement age of teaching staff of government and private colleges in Haryana, Punjab and Haryana high court has issued notices to the government and University Grants Commission (UGC).

Justice Rajiv Narain Raina of the high court has issued notices after hearing a petition filed by Om Prakash Wadhwa of Rohtak.
According to the petitioner, arbitrariness is so writ large that in spite of UGC mandate for superannuation age as 60, Haryana has been compulsorily retiring government college teachers at the age of 58. It was also stated that the government-aided private college teachers are being retired at the age of 60 years despite the fact that their salary is also paid from the state government exchequer and the two are similarly situated in every aspect, except the retirement age.

The petitioner, who is working as associate professor (public administration) in government college Rohtak, seeks that the state government should justify discriminatory attitude in retiring government college teachers at the age of 58 years and government-aided private college teachers at the age of 60 years. Next hearing is scheduled on February 17
