Union minister of human resource development MM Pallam Raju on Sunday said the no-detention policy under the Right to Education Act was being looked into as it had been getting a negative feedback by leading to a laggard behaviour among students and teachers. A sub-committee of the Central Advisory Board of Education headed by Haryana education minister Geeta Bhukkal is looking into the issue. "The no-detention policy has produced a mixed response. We are noticing that teachers have also got relaxed and are not teaching properly. This should not be the case. The policy is good and it is to bring all students on par, not to divide them. Now the children are also relaxed but they should know that this is their exam," said Raju. He said those schools which were not adhering to the RTE policies or were not taking children from the economically weaker sections could be punished by the state governments, which were responsible for implementing the act properly. Raju said Panjab University had been enjoying a special status from the HRD ministry and was being given substantial funding. He said developing the university, which has been ranked number 1 in the country, was the topmost priority and then came everything else, including the central status. "Under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan, the states can go ahead and avail funds and the PU should also do the same," he added.
