Scholarships OK but where’s the staff?

Jalandhar, November 8
Though Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today launched the Dr Hargobind Khurana Scholarship Scheme with much fanfare, educationists say it may be of little help to students till adequate staff was recruited in government schools.

They said the situation was particularly alarming in rural and border area schools where not only staff but even basic infrastructure was lacking.

The scheme may not even come to the aid of students who want to pursue career in medicine and engineering as there is a paucity of teachers of medical and non-medical streams.

Teachers who had assembled at the PAP Grounds here to attend the launch function of the scheme said the government should have first appointed teachers and upgraded infrastructure in schools so that the scholarship-holders could have benefited in “real sense”.

A few teachers from Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Ferozepur, Tarn Taran and Bathinda pointed out that schools in rural areas were facing shortage of teachers whereas those in urban areas had excess staff. “The government should rationalise staff strength,” they said.
