Scholarship scheme: Centre releases funds, Punjab ‘sleeps’-NSCA

Jalandhar Even as the Central government released its share of Rs 281 crore under the Post Matric Scheduled Castes Scholarship scheme, the ruling SAD-BJP alliance in the state was yet to release its share of Rs 43 crore in the scheme. While the Punjab government has been crying foul over the role of the Central government, the fact was that the SAD-BJP government-led by Chief Minister
ParDkash Singh Badal was making false and misleading statements that the state government would be releasing its share soon. In a press note issued here, on Monday, NSCA president Paramjit Singh Kainth said that to ensure that the funds were released well on time in future, accountability should be fixed. “Earlier, each year there was as many as 1.5 lakh beneficiaries for the scholarship. But, now the number of Scheduled Caste students has gone up to almost 4.50 lakh,” he added. Kainth said that the post-matric scholarship scheme was launched by the Central government in the year 1998. “It was unfortunate that despite 34 Scheduled Caste members belonging to the SAD, the BJP and the Congress were elected, but none raised their voice on this serious issue. This despite the fact that many students had to leave their studies midway owing to paucity of funds,” he added. “The total pending amount for the last three years was about Rs 427 crore, but the Centre and the state were least bothered. Apart from this there were many other schemes for the Scheduled Castes, which remain on paper only. In some schemes money has been diverted,” said the NSCA president.
