Kamal Sharma defends rise in the perks of CM, Ministers and MLAs

By Anil Dogra
Jalandhar, November 10: Punjab BJP chief Kamal Sharma admitted that the state was passing through a severe financial crisis but at the same time he denied that the state government employees were not being paid their salaries.
Interacting with media persons at a gathering at the Mayor House, Sharma said that for the remedial steps to tackle the financial crunch, the SAD-BJP
government was doing all that possible in its ambit. He defended the decision of the state government for raising the salaries and perks of state Chief Minister, Ministers, Chief Parliamentary Secretaries and MLAs saying that the government had acted on the recommendations of the committee headed by the Speaker of the state assembly and that there was no hefty increase in the salaries and perks whereas the recommendations accepted clearly indicate an increase of 58% hike in the emoluments of the state law makers. This has been done at the time when not only the state coffers are empty but the government was also finding itself in a state of uncertain financial status from where to pay salaries to its employees.

When asked about any austerity drive likely to be initiated by the state government to curb unplanned and unnecessary expenditures to bring the slowing down economy of the state, the BJP leader denied having any knowledge about such a drive. When encountered with another question for having chalked out any plan of the BJP for forcing the government to launch austerity drive, Sharma said that it was the prerogative of the state government what kind of steps should be initiated.
On the buying a Rs. 83 crore helicopter by the government on the face of the state reeling under financial crisis, he said that the better option was to put the query to the government.
