HC notice to Punjab on selection of 5178 rural teachers

Taking up a petition seeking directions that Masters of Education (MEd) degree should also be treated on a par with other post-graduate degrees for awarding 10 additional marks in the examination conducted for filling 5,178 posts of rural associate teachers in Punjab, the Punjab and Haryana high court has issued a notice of motion to the state government.
The petition filed by Jasveer Kaur of Abohar, who holds BA, BEd and MEd degrees, came up for hearing before the court headed by justice Tejinder Singh Dhindsa on Thursday.

The court was informed that as per the selection criteria notified by the government on July 9, basic educational and professional qualification of graduation and BEd shall earn 25 marks each, while the postgraduation qualification shall earn 10 additional marks. The petitioner has alleged that when she appeared for counselling in October, she was told that 10 additional marks for higher qualification could not be awarded for the MEd degree. The result of recruitment is, however, yet to be finalised.
The case would now come up for hearing on February 5, 2014
