Teachers unhappy over mandatory order for remedial coaching

Ludhiana Director General of School Education has mandated remedial coaching for the students of Class IX in the subjects of Science and Mathematics. This step is taken to bring weak students in the main streamline with remedial coaching, so that they could cover up in their board examinations. According to the notification of DGSE, every school has to identify 10 per cent of its students, comparatively weak to other students and they will be attending this remedial coaching. Subject teachers in the school will take these
remedial classes for one hour before or after school hours. Teachers would be paid of remuneration of Rs 500 per student for these classes. But the teaching community is not happy with this mandatory order. Teachers have their own point of stand. State President of Master Cadre Union Gurpreet Singh Riar said that government is not creating the posts of Mathematics and Science teachers till Middle Schools, thus the base of the students remain low, lacking subject expert. Now when student reach to Class IX, government suddenly brings up the point of remedial coaching. Teachers feel that department should give a choice to school authorities to hire teachers from outside for these extra classes. A Mathematics teacher at a government school near Mundian, requesting anonymity said, “I have small baby to look after and moreover, my school is very far from my home. Now whengovernment is looking for extra classes, it became very difficult for me to handle, especially winters are heading, thus when the days will be short, giving one hour more to school will be a big headache and problem for me.” Teachers said that for these extra classes, school authorities may hire teachers from outside. The remuneration could be given to those who are willing. This will generate employability for many and also lessen the burden of teachers.
