If all goes well with chief minister Parkash Singh Badal's assertion on getting a "through probe" into the cheating case against Mewa Singh, the close aide of education minister Sikander Singh Maluka, the accused is likely to be summoned by the Unfair Means Committee (UMC) of the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) before October 23.
The PSEB has asked the UMC to submit the probe report by October 23 so that the required follow-up action be initiated against Mewa, highly placed sources in the Board told HT here.
The chief minister after the cabinet meeting earlier this week had announced that he would order a thorough inquiry into the matter.
The Board has already sent the documents relevant to the probe to the UMC, which included the attendance sheets of the examination halls at the two centres - the one where Mewa was scheduled to take the Class 10 exams and the other that finally became his centre under the PSEB's open school system.
According to sources, the UMC is expected to send Mewa's answer sheets that bear his signatures besides samples of his handwriting to a forensic lab.
The 38-year-old under-matric dropout scored 71% marks in the open school exam for matriculation.
The complainant had moved the PSEB, challenging Mewa's matriculation certificate and demanding a probe into the charges that someone impersonated Mewa and took the exam in his place at a centre changed two days before the beginning of the exams.
Maluka, meanwhile, has ruled out his involvement in the entire episode.
Mewa is scheduled to return to India after a week-long leisure trip to Tashkent along with Maluka's nephew on Monday evening.
Mewa, meanwhile, has got a call from the Punjab Subordinate Services Selection Board (PSSSB) to appear for a driving test for a government job as a driver on October 8.
The PSSSB had cancelled some 1,800 applications of those candidates who had not submitted the required documents related to the qualification. But Mewa's application that also did not have the required documents was accepted, as per the official record.
