Teachers take to road, seek regularisation

Fed up with false promises, members of the SSA/RMSA/CSS unions today took out a rally. The have been urging the state government to regularise their services. The teachers lamented that despite working honestly, the government did not acknowledge their hard work.

State president of the union Deedar Singh Mudki said as many as 14,000 teachers had been working in Punjab for the past five years. As per the state government policy, teachers are regularised after three years of service. "But even after serving for five years, we have not been regularised by the government. The teachers working under the CSS were going through a rough patch as they had not been paid salaries for the past 18 months.

Making it even worse, the monthly salary of the teachers has been reduced to Rs 10,300 from Rs 18,000.

"The teachers have also been asked to pass the Teachers Eligibility Test," said the president. The teachers took out the rally from Atam Nagar Park to DC office. General secretary of the union Sunil Kumar said the government had adopted 'anti-teacher' policies. False cases were registered against the teachers who were taking out a peaceful march in Bathinda on June 8 and May 5.

"The government seems to be in no mood to address our problems," said Mohali.
