Pensioners demand early release of pending arrears

Demanding early release of their pending arrears, Punjab government pensioners from eight districts held a rally outside the district administrative complex here on Friday. Members of the Punjab government pensioners' joint front belonging to districts of Jalandhar, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Ludhiana participated in the zonal rally
. Flaying the state government for its alleged failure in saving their interests, zonal president Mohinder Singh Parwana said: “The government has failed to fulfill the pre-poll premises. Despite several reminders, nothing has been done so far by the state government.” He said: “The government is claiming to be cash-starved but huge money is being spent on providing luxuries to ministers and political leaders. Providing benefits to pensioners is least on its priority list.” All those who attended the rally demanded release of pending arrears of dearness allowance, travelling allowance, implementation of recommendations by pay commission relating to medical allowance and facilities on par with the pensioners of various departments. “If the government will not fulfill our demands, we will intensify our agitation across the state and the government will have to face the ire of the pensioners in the forthcoming parliamentary elections,” said Kewal Singh, an agitator.
