The deputy state project director, Punjab Edusat Society, Rajeev Sharma, has instructed district education officers (DEOs) in Punjab and school heads to create awareness about the All India Sainik School Entrance examination.
The instructions say teachers of government schools will prepare students and motivate them to take the entrance exam.
To create awareness regarding the examination for admission to Classes 6 and 9, a meeting by the principal of Sainik School Kapurthala during one of the monthly meetings of DEOs in Chandigarh will be organised so that a presentation with regard to the admission procedure, eligibility criteria, and benefits from the state government can be highlighted to attract students for the exam. Besides, meetings can also be arranged by DEOs district wise where all heads of the schools can attend these.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Col Sudhanshu Arya, principal, Sainik School Kapurthala, said, "In the last few years, a lot of good schools have come up in the state, so parents are keen to send their children to those schools. Moreover, students' interest is declining in the armed forces and we are trying to create more and more awareness among students to join the armed forces. It has been observed that the response from Punjab domiciles for the Sainik School entrance exam is very poor.
The school receives 800-900 applications every year of which 50% are from other states. So to create awareness about the entrance exam, we have asked the office of the director general school education to help us create awareness among students."
"We are creating awareness through pamphlets and have asked our own students to spread word in their neighbourhood about the benefits of studying in a Sainik School."
There are 24 sainik schools all over the country. Their primary aim is to prepare boys from socio-economically backward section of society academically, physically and mentally for entry into the National Defence Academy.

For Class 6: Boys between 10-11 years as on Jul 1, 2014 (boys born between Jul 2, 2003 and Jul 1, 2004)
For Class 9 Boys between 13-14 years as on Jul 1, 2014 (boys born between Jul 2, 2000 and Jul 1, 2001)
Mode of selection: Through All India Entrance Test, Personal Interview and Medical Fitness Test
Number of seats: Class 6 - 90, Class 9 -10
Examination centres: Kapurthala, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Faridkot and Patiala (subject to adequate number of candidates available for each centre)
Allocation of seats - Punjab domiciles 67%, others 33%
