Quality missing in techical education: Pallam Raju
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Union HRD minister Pallam Raju on Monday said the quality of technical education in the country should be improved and graduates should be given skill training to equip them meet requirements of industry.
Though the number of engineering graduates passing out annually in the country was high, majority of them were not "industry-ready" to meet the demands expected by their employers, Raju said, after inaugurating the new regional office of All India Council For Technical Education here.

UGC: New technical education norms not for diploma courses
NEW DELHI: HRD ministry and University Grants Commission (UGC) on Monday said the new regulations being drafted for technical educations institutions will affect only affiliated colleges and those offering graduate degrees. A senior official said, "Draft regulations will leave out institutions offering all diploma courses."
Clarification has come in the wake of reports that a large number of management institutions are planning to go to the Supreme Court (SC) against the proposed UGC regulations. Their plea is that regulation by UGC will delay the admission process that is already in motion.

Police detain 51 protesting teachers ahead of PM’s visit
Chandigarh, December 30
The local police today arrested 51 computer teachers, including 32 female teachers, from Sector 24 under preventive measures ahead of Prime Minister’s visit. The computer teachers were protesting for the fulfilment of their pending demands for past many days in the city.
Today, they wanted to meet the PM at Mullanpur with their list of demands. The police, however, arrested them in Sector 24 at around 11.30 am, when they tried to move towards Mullanpur.

Unaided school teachers beat drums, stage protest

Members of the union of Unaided Staff (aided schools) Front, Punjab, led by block president, today beat drums and staged a dharna in the ward of Bathinda MLA (Rural) Darshan Singh Kotfatta.
Braving the cold weather, the teachers raised banners stating ‘Lok jagao, aided schools bachao’. Addressing the teachers, the leaders accused the state government and the education department of giving a step-motherly treatment to the schools and hence, the teachers felt the need of making the public aware of the importance of the schools and how the government was neglecting them.

With just a day for the winter holidays at schools to end, worries on how to clothe their wards in the chilly winters have begun clouding the brow of teachers across government schools. With just a meagre amount of Rs 400 (per child) received as uniform grants, teachers are in a fix as to how to buy proper woollens uniforms with the chilly northern plains hitting sub zero temperatures.
While disbursal of uniform grants has been going on for the past three years, the amount has stayed the same despite a substantial rise in prices.
