Govt cracks the whip on teachers for poor results

Faridkot, June 16
The School Education Department today ordered disciplinary action against all principals and teachers of government schools who have
shown less than 20 per cent pass percentage in Class XII and X examinations of the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB). The results were announced last month.
Besides taking disciplinary action against these “poorly performing” teachers and principals under the Punjab Civil Services (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, orders have also been issued to transfer them within the respective districts.
While Principals are responsible for the overall result of the schools, teachers whose students have performed poorly in individual subjects, i.e. with pass percentage of less than 20 per cent, will have to face action.
In a letter issued to all Circle Education Offices (CEOs) and District Education Officers (DEOs), the Special Secretary of the School Education Department today asked them to mark the performance of these teachers and principals as “not-satisfactory” in their annual confidential report (ACR).
According to the letter, the pass rate of Class 10 students in private (affiliated and associated) schools was higher — at 70.08 per cent for private schools and 55.76 per cent for affiliated schools — than government schools’ 52.80 per cent.
The Class 12 results also showed a similar trend. The pass rate in affiliated and associated private schools was 62.78 and 61.82, respectively, and in government schools, it was 61.90 per cent.
As many as 62,916 students of Class XII were declared “fail” in one subject and 94,271 class X students failed in two subjects, reads the letter. A day after the PSEB declared the Class XII results, state Education Minister Aruna Chaudhary had announced her decision to transfer all principals and teachers of government schools which showed less than 20 per cent pass results.
The School Education Department has directed the district education authorities to award teachers and principals who have shown 90 per cent or more pass results.
