14 new IIITs to be established, Shashi Tharoor says

NEW DELHI: The government has approved the establishment of 14 new Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT), Parliament was told on Wednesday.

"Under the approved scheme of setting up 20 IIITs on a not-for-profit public-private partnership, the central government has given approval for establishment in 14 states," Minister of state for human resource development Shashi Tharoor said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

66 arrested SSA/RMSA teachers released

The City Police has released the 66 teachers arrested for staging a protest at the Grain Market on the Jalandhar bypass on February 2.

The teachers, working under the Sarav Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), were demanding regularisation of their jobs.

Adarsh school recovers salaries ‘inadvertently’ paid to teachers

The Punjab Education Development Board (PEDB) has recovered three months’ salary from five women teachers of an Adarsh school that was paid to them “inadvertently” during their paid maternity leave.

Assam govt to fill up over 1 lakh vacancies

Guwahati, Feb. 13 (PTI) Assam government will provide employment to over one lakh people across various departments in the future, the state Assembly was told today. Presenting the 2014-15 interim budget, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said, "I have asked all the departments to provide appointments against all available vacancies numbering around 1,00,927 in a time-bound manner." Staff resent non-payment of salaries Teachers have to provide eatables to students, lament poor economic health

Even as the state government is gearing up for a mega event to mark the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the war memorial here on Wednesday, employees of various departments are lamenting non-payment of salaries.

Staff at a majority of government schools have not been paid salaries since December. It is affecting academic and other routine work at these schools. Though the mid-day meal for the schools situated in the municipal corporation limit has been outsourced to one NGO but its working has been affected in rural areas, said office-bearers of the Democratic Teachers Front (DTF). They said teachers were forced to arrange eatables and other articles on their own to continue providing meals to students. They said it would have been nice that the state government had cleared pending dues before holding a mega event.

HC: Candidates seeking revaluation can apply for job

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has made it clear that from now on, candidates will be able to apply for government jobs even if they have not cleared the qualifying examination, but have applied for re-evaluation before the last date for submitting forms.

Jobless ETT protest on as talks with CM fail

Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal's talks with the unemployed elementary trained teachers (ETT) on Wednesday failed to reach a consensus as they rejected the offer for jobs at a paltry monthly salary of Rs. 2,000 on contractual basis for two years.


These 3,500-strong unemployed teachers had intensified their protest for jobs in 2010 after they got two-year ETT certificates for teaching in primary schools on the initiative of the state's education department.

High court wants new merit list in four weeks

Finding the 2000 selection of 3,206 junior basic trained (JBT) teachers by the Haryana government "vitiated, though not fully", the Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday ordered a fresh merit list within four weeks.


The move will terminate the services of undeserving teachers who were recruited when Om Prakash Chautala was chief minister. Pronouncing the judgment over some 13-year-old petitions challenging the selection, justice K Kannan made it clear that the appointment of at least 221 teachers, whose marks were reduced later but still their names put on the merit list, shall not be interfered with.

HC verdict on Haryana JBT selections today

The Punjab and Haryana high court will on Wednesday pronounce its judgment on a bunch of nearly 80 petitions challenging the selection of 3,206 junior basic trained (JBT) teachers by the Haryana government in 2000 during the-then regime of Om Prakash Chautala as chief minister. In January last year, the special CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) court at Rohni, New Delhi, had convicted Om Prakash Chautala; his son, Ajay Chautala; IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officers Vidya Dhar and Sanjiv Kumar; and 51 other of corruption in the same case and sentenced them. The CBI had found the selection process tainted. However, the selected teachers are still in service. The petitioners, deprived of selection, had sought removal of 1,577 allegedly tainted JBT teachers, besides own appointment in place. AIPMT:CBSE not to upload answer keys

The CBSE will not upload the answer keys for the next All-India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) as well. Last year’s undergraduate medical entrance exam had as many as seven ambiguous questions, following which students and teachers demanded uploading of the answer keys before the declaration of results to confirm their answers.

Government to amend AICTE Act

NEW DELHI: After much delay, the government has decided to amend the All Indian Council of Technical Education (AICTE) Act to undo a Supreme Court ruling which had stripped the council of its powers to approve institutes offering technical courses.

 An interim arrangement would be put in place till then where AICTE would set standards for technical institutes and universities would provide the affiliation. The institutes on their part would have to get themselves assessed by the National Board of Accreditation.

UT Education Dept rejects computer teachers' claim

The UT Education Department today clarified that the major claim made by computer teachers, who are protesting for the past 10 days, is not justified.

In a press statement issued today, the department said the claim of the computer teachers that the Punjab rules were applicable to them was not accurate. They were not UT employees, and therefore, the Punjab Civil Services rules were not applicable to them.

UT Computer teachers seek job stability, better salary

ETT teachers’ protest going strong

HC tells MSFC to implement Sixth Pay Commission wages

The Bombay High Court has asked the loss-making Maharashtra State Financial Corporation to implement the Sixth Pay Commission pay scales for its staff without waiting for the state government's approval.
